Once you have a frame of reference, though, it's pretty easy to adjust the quarters grid to framing a thirds composition. The grid overlay on the Nikon cameras divides the viewfinder into quarters, not thirds.

I don't ever recall a digital camera that didn't have the grid lines as a toggle'able option. You're looking for something that says rule of thirds, and its not labeled that.

I suggest digging a little deeper into the options menu. I suspect, though, that you can very quickly and accurately compose a rule of thirds image with the existing grid, though That is, you can't get the grid crosspoints to overlay the "thirds" of the viewfinder. What I do see is a grid divided into 1/4s. Just a thought.Īm I missing something here? I just google it up and I don't see a rule of thirds grid. Maybe you should just check your settings in the shooting menu, as Reagan mentioned. I turned on the grid display in my D300 viewfinder. The Viewfinder Grid Display is in the Shooting/Display part of your Custom Menu Settings on a D600 it is D2 So having said that, is there a way to impose a rule of thirds grid on either the viewfinder or live view for the Nikon FX cameras? I've been Googling for ideas, but I haven't found anything to help me out. It should be an option just like how Canon and Sony makes it available for their cameras. I prefer to have an overlay to make things more precise. Look, I know some of you guys are going to assert that it's a non-issue and that I should be able to visualize it in my head, but I can't. I'm somewhat annoyed by the fact that Nikon refuses to implement a rule of thirds overlay for their DSLRs.
